Cover sketches for issue 2 of SWEETS. Just wrapped up the inks, and I'm nearly done coloring. I'll upload a peek soon. Enjoy!

Lettered thumbnails

In order to help eliminate storytelling problems, I decided to letter my thumbnails, all 22 pages. These aren't top notch letters, just placement letters to help me spot things that need to be changed before drawing the pages. So far, I've found several pages and panels that don't quite work as expected and I'm making small  tweaks to the thumbnails before jumping into the final pencil stage. I've always found it easier to spot problems in print rather than on screen, so I tack these up on my giant cork wall and look at them for a few days. Sorry for the distant photo, but I'm doing my best to avoid story spoilers.

Thumbnail page

Although I've been thumbnailing on my art boards for years, I'm really enjoying working in the Mokeskine sketchbook on SWEETS. I find it helpful to change my methods on a regular basis to keep things fresh and force myself outside my comfort zone.

Thumbnails

Here's a peek at two pages from SWEETS. I'm still in the early stages of doing thumbnails, which is where all the storytelling happens. These were done in a medium sized Moleskine sketchbook (with the blue label).

There's a lot of thought and experimentation in this stage. I'm constantly trying to capture the best moment in every panel and present it in a way that flows within the story and works to make a nice looking page design. It's always tricky but it's one of my favorite steps in the process. I've uploaded large versions, just click to get a bigger look.
